The Purpose of Nursing

The Purpose of Nursing

Ask five nurses the following question. Ask the question without explanation or expansion. Tell them you are doing a class project and need the following question answered. There are no right or wrong answers. “What is the purpose of nursing?” Ask five lay persons the exact same question in the exact same manner. Summarize your findings and report to the class. When you complete this project, you will have just completed your first qualitative research project. Albeit an abbreviated one, but nonetheless, a qualitative study.

The Purpose of Nursing
Nursing is a complex profession and everyone is entitled to a different understanding of the nursing profession. Summing up, nursing is perceived as a profession in which trained care providers including nurses offer care to patients and the community at large. Nursing is centered on offering authentic care to individuals (Sitzman & Watson, 2018). Nurses are entitled to different responsibilities such as assessing different individual health needs through diagnostic tests. According to nurses, one of the purposes of nurses is to offer appropriate and timely care to patients presented with different health conditions. Based on this purpose, care provided to patients by nurses encompasses several activities including diagnostic tests, recording patient information, enquiring about patient medical history, and deciding on the best treatment intervention while observing ethical and legal considerations (ANA, 2020).
The other purpose of nursing is to advocate the rights of patients and the nursing profession at large. The main focus of the nurses is the well-being of patients which includes patients’ legal and personal rights. Nurses, therefore, assist in advocating for the interests of the patients and ensuring quality care is provided as well as offering support in medical decisions (Gerber, 2018). The other role of nurses is planning and providing the appropriate treatment, monitoring the treatment process, and patient progress. Based on this, nurses plan the care treatment for patients which is crucial to achieving optimal patient outcomes. They portray critical thinking when evaluating patients’ symptoms and come up with appropriate decisions that aid in settling on the best intervention measures ensuring quality care. Additionally, it is the role of a nurse to follow up on the progress of the patient after offering treatment intervention and conduct every activity required for treatment effectiveness.
Further nurses are entitled to educate patients and the community about ways of maintaining good health, preventing diseases, and managing health conditions. When offering this health-related education, nurses promote healthy living by educating patients and families on ways of healthy living, ways to prevent illnesses, and the benefits of following medication guidelines, especially in home care settings. Nurses also offer different kinds of support to patients presented with different health conditions for illness management, including emotional support (ANA, 2020).
