The most important prevention program is to talk to kids and teens about what is appropriate touching and what is not and to make them aware of signs that a person may not be safe. Pedophiles go after children that are easily manipulated or who don’t think they are being victimized–these are the ones we have to reach first.
They have had a psychiatric illness or abuse alcohol or drugs, or both. They all have a history of using children in sex acts. Offenders need to admit they have a problem before they can begin to change their behavior. More education and understanding are needed to help the public recognize child molesters and pedophiles. Every child is at risk for sexual victimization, even your own child.
The top three places where pedophiles find children to victimize are schools, playgrounds, and malls.
