In general terms, the Systems development life cycle, also called application development life cycle (according to systems, information, and software engineering), is a structural procedure that comprises planning, creating, testing, and the deployment of an information system. The systems development life cycle can be applied to various hardware and software configurations. This system is used broadly in the healthcare industry for the design of information systems and its implementation. It can be seen further as a project management system that defines the stages involved in conceptualizing a project from inception to completion.
The successful implementation of electric health information technology (EHIT) is greatly dependent on the extent to which nurses who are ultimately the majority of end-users, are directly involved and engaged through the systems development life cycle (Risling & Risling, 2020). In the system analysis stage, existing technology to see what is working and what is not working. Nurses are critical in providing information on the challenges and benefits they encountered during their use of existing systems. Excluding nurses at this point would be adopting the use of new systems, which may not be effective.
Without nurses on the horizon to provide the real evidence, theoretical assumptions may not reflect the actual operations. The nature of the work of nurses in the healthcare facility places them in a better position in the identification of critical challenges in the collection, assessment, retrieval, and information used in the existing information system. Neglecting the contribution of nurses would imply that new healthcare information would not respond to the immediate information technology needs of nurses.
The next stage of the SDLC system design involves developing a plan for improving the existing system based on the results of the analysis of the systems, the previous stage. At this level, there is an identification of the components which include, the user interface, databases, hardware, software, and how all the parts of the health information system can be put together into a complete system of efficiency. Nurses play a critical role in the proposal of mechanisms of operations that are required in the incorporation into new systems in performance enhancement. The designers should engage nurses in the process of testing and refining the system. Nurse’s exclusion in this activity would imply that the new technology would not be compatible with the nurse’s data input and output requirements. This will lead to the failure of the entire system design rendering it useless (Kim et al., 2020).
In my practice setting, I was actively involved in systems maintenance and support, which is the third stage of SDLC, which generally entails the activities involved in identifying and fixing problems that could otherwise compromise the functions of the new healthcare information technology. We worked closely with the Health information systems vendor and developer. It was important for my colleagues and me as we were able to identify bugs in the system that affect the functions and application of the new technology. These matters were reported to the nurse executive who partnered with the information technology specialists who initiated corrective and preventive measures (Wang et al., 2019).
In conclusion, nurse practitioners are the core of the implementation of electronic healthcare information systems. Nurses should be actively engaged in the information system development life cycle. Nurses are positioned strategically in the definition of the needs of their facilities.
