The general medical association is a resident-based practice within the tertiary care facility providing internal medicine and family care services with 63 residents, seven attending physicians and several mid-level providers (NPs & PAs) across two geographically separate locations on the same campus – the outpatient department (OPD) and women’s health (OB-GYN) clinic. Together, the OPD and OB-GYN see about 32,000 patients annually with approximately 80% of patients on Medicaid, 10% with commercial insurance, and 10% self-pay.

The physical layout of staff work areas and constant rotation of residents create an inefficient environment for several health care delivery processes such as timely prescription renewals. The environment also strains relationships with patients, pharmacies, and clinic staff with the handling of multiple redundant phone calls and faxes from the same patients and pharmacies inquiring about the status of prescription renewal requests.

Technological advancements have enhanced the operation of various sectors in the global economy. This has been through the enhancement of operations within various facilities, which has led to timely and high-quality outcomes, thus achieving the various sectors goals that incorporate such goals into their operations. With the current global digitization, it is rare to find a company that insists on traditional methods of running their operations, including storing data in paper and organizing physical meetings with various stakeholders, among others. The current global pandemic, COVID-19, has emphasized the need to have a well-organized technological system within our systems. There have been strategies to control the spread, which calls for minimal physical contact. Companies and sectors have incorporated technology in running their operations, including organizing online meetings with the various stakeholders without the need to meet physically. Additionally, it is evident that despite various sectors getting affected by the pandemic, the companies and sectors that embraced technology in their operations have managed to get over this situation. This is supported by the fact that they are recovering significantly compared to other organizations and sectors that failed to embrace technology in their operations.
Focusing on healthcare, the benefits of the incorporation of technology is magnanimous. Before the various inventions, healthcare organizations had many unsolved problems. There was a poor understanding of health conditions, which made their management difficult. There were also increased cases of overcrowding in health facilities, which led to many individuals failing to get the necessary and timely care. The overall outcome was poor patient health outcomes and poor quality of life. However, this has been effectively addressed due to the advancement in technology (Piscotty Jr et al., 2015). Doctors can quickly make an accurate and reliable diagnosis through the help of various technological devices. This has so far aided in ruling out uncertainties in diagnosis which are associated with inaccurate management strategies.
Furthermore, patients can easily learn more about their health through the health information online, as long as they are from a certified medical database. Patients with chronic conditions often require close monitoring and regular follow-ups to assess their progress. However, frequent hospital visits can be difficult for some patients since they may lack the necessary resources to sustain frequent visits, especially those in rural settings. The application of technology has helped in addressing this scenario; for instance, through telehealth, the patient can easily communicate with a healthcare professional who will monitor their health and advise appropriately without the need for the patients to be physically present in the health facilities (Tuckson et al., 2017).
There are several other benefits that technology has brought to the healthcare sector, all of which improve care coordination and provision that has been essential in enhancing patients’ health outcomes and overall quality of life. A Problem That Can Occur With Technology in Healthcare
I think technology is a new development, which is still under some trial to determine its effectiveness. So far, this has proved significant in addressing major health issues that have been challenging to address for a long time. The case study provided outlines with some loopholes which occur as a result of technology. The tertiary care facility offers its services to a significant number of individuals annually, as described. It also has a considerable number of care providers who help in taking care of the patients. Additionally, the health facility embraces web-based portal technology to enhance care coordination between the physicians and the patients.
From this information alone, one would suggest that this is an ideal facility, which has managed to apply technology appropriately in running its operations. Further analysis of the case study reveals that the application of technology in the facility has some setbacks. The physical layout of staff work areas makes it hard to coordinate physical care and, at the same time, coordinate care among patients who are in constant communication with the facility inquiring about the status of prescription renewal requests. This is a significant concern since there is no proper coordination of care for those seeking medication physically and those seeking it from remote settings through technology.
It is a significant problem since healthcare providers have high chances of confusion concerning the provision of care services. Given the nature of their jobs, it is highly likely that the patients remotely seeking health interventions would do so when the healthcare providers are occupied with other patients, some being in emergencies. Dealing with more than one patient can result in poor delivery of care services to one or both patients. This is associated with poor care provider-patient relationship, which is associated with poor health outcomes. The state of confusion caused by such poor coordination also increases the likelihood of medication errors. Incidences of medication errors could be due to prescription errors, or wrong patient identification, as many patients are consulting about their prescription status at the same time. It is highly likely to have mixed up information, leading to the wrong prescription or correct prescription to the wrong patient. Medication errors are among the commonest causes of death globally (World Health Organization, 2016). Although preventable, the incidence remains high, even with various measures to prevent them.
It has devastating impacts on the patients, as it can result in various complications, which lead to increased hospital stays and financial burden to the patients and their families since managing such complications is costly. Additionally, some of the complications are potentially life-threatening, which could even lead to death. The health facility or care providers responsible at the time of occurrence of such medication errors also have increased risks of facing other consequences, such as license revocation or suspension as well incarceration (World Health Organization, 2016). In this scenario, the application of technology in healthcare could lead to problems, for instance, increased incidences of medication errors and strained provider-patient relationships. It occurs mainly due lack of an appropriate environment which will embrace balanced coordination of care for patients physically present in the health facilities and those acquiring the services remotely using the various technological processes available (Califf et al., 2020). Such imbalance and inappropriate environment result in a state of confusion among the care providers, resulting in cases of medication errors, as highlighted.
A Solution Aimed At Improving or Resolving Some Aspect of Healthcare Information Delivery
Technology has been significant in enhancing patient health outcomes, especially in the provision of healthcare services. Technology has enhanced the delivery of healthcare information since the patients and the care providers can constantly communicate, which is necessary for monitoring the patients and addressing their concerns without the need to be physically present in the health facilities. This is very cost-effective to the patients and also crucial in preventing overcrowding in health facilities. These benefits associated with applying technology in healthcare, especially in delivering healthcare information, emphasize the need to develop strategies to address the various barriers that may hinder the effective delivery of healthcare information (Groenier et al., 2017). An essential solution in addressing the significant challenges affecting healthcare information delivery involves proper structuring and organization of the personnel by assigning specific roles to different specialists at the appropriate schedules where they will have ample time to listen and monitor the patients without any hurry.
Proper structuring the available care providers to take care of both groups of patients will ensure proper coordination of care for both groups, thus enabling the patients to benefit maximally from the use of technology while seeking healthcare services, and at the same time not compromising the safety and quality of care offered to patients physically present in the health facilities (Groenier et al., 2017). It is also crucial to create a reliable schedule where patients can digitally consult their care providers. This will help prevent commotions associated with the influx of patients who randomly seek consultations from care providers, a practice that is associated with confusion among the care providers, which subsequently result in increased risks of medication errors.
In summary, technology is an essential aspect of the healthcare sector and other various sectors in the economy. In the healthcare sector, technology is associated with accurate, reliable and timely provision of care, which subsequently leads to better patient health outcomes and improved quality of life. Various factors, however, hinder the effectiveness of these technologies in addressing the various patient health concerns. These mainly occur when there is poor coordination of service delivery, as seen in the case study. Achieving the best from technology in healthcare, especially in improving the patient’s health outcomes and quality of life requires developing strategies that will help address the various factors that hinder the effectiveness of such technology. In this scenario, proper scheduling and structuring of the facility and its staff enhance proper care coordination. Technology is essential; therefore, we should all embrace it. We can only achieve the best from it by addressing the various factors which may limit its effectiveness.
