Syphilis in African American populations
Nurses play a critical role in health promotion activities in the community. Health promotion involves the education and management of several populations or community healthcare challenges. One challenge that may be addressed by effective nursing health promotion is the prevalence of syphilis STI among many African American males aged 25-29. Syphilis is a bacterial disease that I characterized by sores in the mouth, especially around the genital areas. As the CDC reports, approximately 34.7 % of reported syphilis cases were among the black African American males. This is around 4.7 times more than in the white population. Syphilis in men may contribute to complications such as meningitis, susceptibility to HIV contraction, and destruction of body organs such as the heart and brain. It may be prevented through the practice of safe sex and non-sharing of personal items such as needles and clothing. (McNeil & Bachmann, 2016). Nurses may hold awareness campaigns in the community and collaborate with healthcare providers to train people and provide free condoms and screening services to the target populations.
The Complications of Syphilis
Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum and is often spread through sexual contact. It is characterized by sores in the mouth or around the genitals. Contact of the mucus membrane or body fluids with the syphilitic chancre may contribute to infection. Most males in this age category have a high chance of contracting syphilis due to unhealthy social habits. For instance, unsafe sex and the habit of sexual promiscuity may expose them to syphilis infection. As studies suggest, other contributing factors make them susceptible to diseases such as injection-related drug abuse, when they share needles and syringes with infected persons (McNeil & Bachmann, 2016). The failure to treat syphilis may contribute to health complications and wellness deterioration. It may expose persons to HIV infection through the open syphilis chancres. Additionally, it also contributes to adverse body conditions such s the destruction of vital body organs such as the liver and the heart. Worse still, it exacerbates the contraction or development of neurological conditions such as meningitis and stroke.
The Prevention of Syphilis
The spread of syphilis among this population may be controlled through several individual and healthcare initiatives. For a start, the main way of preventing the spread of syphilis in men aged 25-29 is practicing safe sex. The nursing fraternity holds the responsibility of promoting awareness of the disease and education of the protection measures (Sales et al., 2019). For instance, nurses may offer free screening services for these individuals in educational and even work areas. Besides, through collaboration, they may hold forums in schools, sports centers, and community workshops to educate the target populations on the need to practice safe sex through condoms and shunning unhealthy sexual promiscuity.
Conclusion
Syphilis in men aged 25-29 has become a prevalent public health concern that requires necessary mitigation measures. The condition is also amenable through nursing prevention measures such as community health promotion of safe sex and frequent screening (Tuddenham & Ghanem, 2015). Nursing practitioners are well –placed to oversee the mitigation of syphilis and promote health in the community. Syphilis remains a challenging issue for African American populations with behaviors that favor the spread of the disease. Through proper personal sexual protection and intensive community awareness programs, the spread of the disease among this population may be controlled.
