A literature review is a detailed description of prior research on a specific subject. The literature review examines academic papers, publications, and other materials pertinent to a certain field of study at hand. This past study should be enumerated, described, summarized, objectively evaluated, and clarified in the review. A literature review should provide a theoretical foundation for the research at hand and assist the author in determining the type of the study. It recognizes prior researchers’ efforts, assuring the readers that the study is well formulated (Coffta, 2021). This essay looks at the critical components of a robust literature review and the challenges an individual can predict when writing a literature review
A literature review has various critical components that require consideration. A good literature review should provide an in-depth publication description, a comprehensive summary of a publication’s principal points, the gaps of discussion in research, and an assessment of a publication’s relevance to the subject of the study (The University of Arizona, 2021). On the other hand, it is important to ensure that the literature review is successful for the planned research proposal. This can be achieved by narrowing the topic of discussion to enable the selection of papers accordingly. Then it is critical now to search for literature in peer-reviewed databases, including the library. A researcher must focus on accredited sources, both electronic and printed, during the literature search and be specific on the date range or the specified methodology in place (The University of Guelph, 2021).
After this, as a researcher, I will thoroughly read and evaluate the selected publications to analyze and summarize the studies’ methodologies, findings, discussion, and conclusions. It is important to check on the assumptions, procedures, and conflicting theories the researchers present in the literature. It is essential at this point to select appropriate papers that match the topic of discussion and develop a topic statement that goes hand in hand with the topic of study and the researched literature (The University of Guelph, 2021).
Some of the challenges that I can foresee when writing a literature review include challenges in coordinating sources and ideas to become a logical argument, selecting the right source of information and ideas from accredited databases, and lastly, sorting sources so that I do not remain with sources that provide redundant information.
