Understanding Perception in Communication.
Perception
How might a better knowledge of perception help us become better communicators?
Our comprehension of perception assists us in determining how various individuals receive the same information (Watts & Lombardo, 2022). By considering diverse people’s points of view, you can keep the person’s interests in mind throughout a discussion, ensuring that your viewpoint does not influence how you see or treat the individual. This may also help you avoid judging a book by its cover. Perspective may help you grasp the world you live in, not simply the one around you. According to McLean (2018), numerous elements influence the impact of a message on others, including the manner of speech, word choice, and tone.
Example
Consider a moment when you engaged with someone from another culture. How did your talk progress using the communication model? Was there a misunderstanding?
There was a point in middle school when I engaged with a classmate. She was multilingual but spoke Spanish and came from a different culture than mine. We discussed how our households were run and how we ate at home. My parents were conservative in my family, and since I lived in the country, I didn’t have many friends nearby to go to their house. Her family has many relatives, so she will enjoy playing at home. “Oh, that must be horrible; I couldn’t image living like that without somebody to play with after a hard day at school,” she said. Her words and tone may have been more accepting of my position, and I believe that is where the misunderstanding occurred. I was angry because I misinterpreted what she said and how she said it, but she recognized my response and gave me room for the remainder of the day. We reignited the following day and became mutual.
Change
What would you do differently?
I could have articulated what occurred in the incident that enraged me. I might have also told her that my parents were severely because of something that happened in their youth. I also described how I live miles away from other people and how their children visit their families after school. I could have also informed her that I try participating in after-school activities to be happy at home.

Excellent response! Understanding perception may assist us in being more successful communicators, mainly when speaking with individuals from diverse cultures or backgrounds. Considering how the other person could interpret our message and alter our communication appropriately is critical. Being receptive to comments and eager to clear up any misconceptions is also critical.
It’s fantastic that you rebuilt your connection with your classmate in your case. Understanding and explaining your point of view may go a long way toward boosting communication and relationship development.
Ultimately, perception is essential in communication, and by knowing it, we may become more successful communicators and strengthen our connections with those around us.
