Describe how the general public views the nursing profession. Discuss factors that influence the public’s perception of nursing.
answer
DQ2: Describe how the general public views the nursing profession. Discuss factors that influence the public’s perception of nursing. Describe ways to educate the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing within a changing healthcare system.
Public perception of nursing is that the profession is highly respected and recognized globally, and most people will not hesitate to recommend a nursing career to their qualified students. The public sees nursing as combining knowledge, skill, and professionalism with caring. Many people also depict the profession very poorly due to the growing trend stereotyping. Many people believe that the working conditions are challenging, powerless, and lack autonomy, they have other professions in their dreams, the income is not satisfactory, and nursing has a low social status. Even though nurses have become healthcare professionals in their own right who possess a great deal of knowledge, the public only sometimes values the skills and competencies nurses have acquired through education and innovation.
Patient trust: The public image of nurses as trust professionals provides an essential backdrop for
these relationships; however, the factors at play add other dimensions. Through consistency and skill, this relationship is crafted from moment to moment, from nurse to nurse, and
remains fluid and dynamic during the entire encounter. The patient’s previous encounters are brought to the current situation, adding further complexity to the situation
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing held a symposium in May 2012 regarding nurses and the media. The overarching theme was that nurses must be proactive in influencing the public’s image of the profession.
