ANSWER
Because of the challenges facing the UK’s formal and informal care systems, the number of older people with unmet care and support needs is growing significantly. Addressing these unmet needs is quickly becoming one of the most pressing public health issues. Understanding older people’s care and support needs are necessary before developing effective solutions to address some of these needs.
Methods
A scoping review was carried out using the Arksey and O’Malley original and enhanced framework to understand better the care and support needs of older people in the UK, focusing on those living at home with chronic conditions. Five electronic databases, grey literature, and reference list checks were used in the search. To analyze and categorize the findings of the literature, the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework was used.

Results
The final analysis included forty studies, 32 from academic literature and eight from grey literature. The review found that older adults faced a variety of physical, social, and psychological challenges as a result of living with chronic conditions, necessitating care and support in three major areas: 1) social activities and relationships; 2) psychological health; and 3) mobility, self-care, and domestic life activities. The review also found that many older people wanted to cope with their illness and maintain their independence; however, environmental factors such as 1) a lack of professional advice on self-care strategies; 2) poor communication and coordination of services; and 3) a lack of information on services such as care pathways hampered these efforts. A knowledge gap was also identified regarding the care and support needs of two groups of older people: 1) older workers and 2) older caregivers.
Conclusions
The review found that older people with chronic conditions have unmet care needs regarding their physical and psychological health, social lives, and the environment in which they live and interact. This review’s findings also emphasized the importance of developing care models and support services centered on the needs of older people.
