“The ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions align or do not align with your internal standards is referred to as self-awareness. You can evaluate yourself objectively, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand how others perceive you if you are highly self-aware.”
Simply put, highly self-aware people can objectively interpret their actions, feelings, and thoughts.
It’s a rare skill, as many of us get caught up in emotional interpretations of our circumstances. Self-awareness is critical because it allows leaders to assess their growth and effectiveness and, if necessary, change course.
There are two levels of self-awareness.
Self-awareness can be classified into two types: public and private.
Being aware of how we appear to others is public self-awareness. Because of this awareness, we are more likely to follow social norms and behave in socially acceptable ways.
While there are advantages to this level of awareness, there is also the risk of becoming self-conscious. Those with a high level of this trait may spend excessive time worrying about what others think of them.
Private self-awareness: The ability to observe and reflect on one’s internal state. Private self-awareness individuals are introspective, approaching their feelings and reactions with curiosity.
You may notice yourself tensing up as you prepare for an important meeting. Noticing physical sensations and correctly attributing them to your nervousness about the conference is an example of private self-awareness.
We are hesitant to share certain aspects of ourselves when our self-awareness becomes self-conscious. We create a persona that is unauthentic.
What is the significance of self-awareness?
The Eurich group has conducted research into the nature of self-awareness. According to their findings, looking inward can help us clarify our values, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses. We are conscious of the impact we have on others. According to Eurich’s research, self-aware people are happier and have better relationships. They also feel more personal and social control, as well as more job satisfaction.
When we look outward, we can see how others perceive us. People aware of how others perceive them are more likely to be sympathetic to those with opposing viewpoints. Leaders whose perceptions of themselves match those of others are more likely to empower, include, and recognize others.
