The psychosocial definition investigates the intersection of an individual’s thoughts/needs and external social factors, aiming to illuminate how a person copes and accepts their thoughts and behaviors concerning external factors such as friends, family, colleagues, and community. The psychosocial meaning concerns a person’s internal cognitive aspects of life and how they interact with society. For example, if person A wanted to cut their hair very short and felt strongly about it, but their friends and family did not agree, this would be considered a psychosocial conflict. These conflicts occur daily, raising the question, “What is psychosocial health, and how does one maintain it?”
As they relate to health and wellness, psychosocial health encompasses a state of mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. This definition encompasses a person’s past, present, and future perspectives and how they deal with stress and pressure. Psychosocial health is a person’s mental and emotional well-being related to their identity and how others perceive them.
Characteristics of Psychosocially Healthy Individuals
While everyone faces a different reality and will undoubtedly deal with stress in different ways, psychosocially healthy people often share similar characteristics and cope with day-to-day challenges. People who maintain their psychosocial health are more likely to:
Have high self-esteem, work well with others, maintain optimism, take care of themselves, control their anger, anxiety, tension, and other difficult emotions, and forgive and accept their mistakes.
Have reverence for nature; the planet can function independently, adapt to change easily, and have strong support systems.
For a long time, medicine overlooked the importance of being mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy. Everything was supposed to be solved by a pill! We now know better, and there is plenty of evidence that a healthy mind and a content heart are just as important for disease prevention and treatment. As a result, psychosocial health, defined as a state of mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, deserves a closer examination.
