Potential Effectiveness Resulting From Professional Or Nurse-Provided Social Support Versus Enhancement Of Social Support
ANSWERS
Social support mitigates the negative consequences of emotional labor. A more detailed analysis should be conducted to ensure adequate social support for nurses. As a result, this study was carried out to investigate the relationships between nurses’ emotional demands, social support, and health.
Nurses work in a complex environment that necessitates a wide range of skills, which can be stressful. Nurses typically face physical demands when providing direct care, as well as psychosocial demands when providing nursing care to patients. The combination of these demands determines the workload of nurses. Previous research has found that the workload and intensity of work affect nurses’ burnout and intention to leave.
Furthermore, work-related stress prolongs nurses’ absenteeism, and job demands have increased burnout and negatively impacted newly licensed nurses’ mental health. These findings suggest that job demands are related to job performance and the health of the nurse performing the job.
Nursing is widely recognized as a typical job requiring high emotional labor. According to June and Choi, the emotional demands of Korean office workers were lower than those of Danish care workers. On the other hand, Korean nurses were reported to have scores that were more than 20 points higher than Korean office workers. High emotional demands are positively related to poor health, sleeping problems, work-family conflict, stress, burnout, and intent to leave, and negatively related to hospital nurses’ job satisfaction and performance.
Social support is a significant predictor of job satisfaction. Nursing job satisfaction, in general, has a direct relationship with the positive impact on nursing service quality. Nurses who are satisfied with their jobs will produce excellent and optimal work performance, which will result in patient satisfaction. According to the survey results, the nurse lacks good support and is dissatisfied with her perceived work.
Nursing is the health workforce in a hospital that has the most interaction and meeting times with patients. Nurses accompany and monitor the patient’s health and provide comprehensive and professional nursing care so that the nursing service is one of the measurement standards that affect the health service provided by the hospital and vice versa.
Low levels of nursing job satisfaction will result in decreased performance, less optimal service, and reduced loyalty to the organization and the nursing profession.
