Health Care Inequalities
ANSWERS
What exactly are healthcare disparities?
Health inequalities are disparities in health that are unjust and avoidable across the population and between different groups within society. These include how long people are likely to live, the health conditions they may face, and the care they can access.
The circumstances in which we are born, grow, live, work, and age can impact our health and well-being. These are sometimes referred to as broader health determinants.
Broader health determinants are frequently intertwined. Unemployed people, for example, are more likely to live in lower-quality housing with less access to green space and fresh, healthy food. This means that some groups and communities are more likely than the general population to have poor health. These groups are also more likely to face difficulties in obtaining care.
The reasons for this are multifaceted and may include the following:
the availability of services in their immediate vicinity, service hours
transportation access to childcare language (spoken and written)
literacy
previous bad experiences, misinformation fear
People living in deprived areas, those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities, and those from inclusion health groups, such as the homeless, are the most vulnerable to these inequalities.
