Roles & Issues in Advance Practice Nursing- Prescriptive Authority:State Regulations
QUESTION
In your initial post, please identify the prescriptive authority regulations in the state where you are going to practice( COLORADO). Are there any restrictions, supervision, or collaboration required from a physician? If so, please explain. If you will be practicing in multiple states, do they differ? If you are in a clinical placement please ask your preceptors about the prescriptive regulations and if an agreement is needed. If so, ask to see a copy so you can review what will be required when you begin to practice. Share with one another on the discussion board what you have found. If you are precepting at more than one facility, discuss whether these agreements differ at all, what your thoughts are about any differences, and which you like best.

Advanced Nursing Practice
Nurses are recognized as primary caregivers in Colorado. The state of Colorado grants nurses the ability to diagnose, and prescribe medications to their patients without physician supervision. For nurses to be eligible for prescriptive authority, they must have a graduate degree in nursing, and have an education background and training in the use of prescription drugs. Physicians are required to mentor advanced perspective nurses seeking prescription authority (Erin, 2020). A physician mentor must have a license to practice medicine in Colorado and be in good standing. The advanced practice nurse must get provisional prescriptive authority from the nursing board to prescribe drugs to their patients.
The requirement needed are; a graduate degree in a nursing specialty, complete education requirements in pharmacology, and pass the practitioner certification exam. The APN must have a national certification issued by an accrediting agency that is recognized nationally as advised by the Nursing Board in the advanced perspective nurses’ specialty unless the nursing board grants an exception. The nursing practitioner should have professional liability insurance, and complete 1800 preceptorship with a physician and RXN preceptor (Gadbois et al., 2014). After completing these requirements, a nursing practitioner is free to diagnose and treat patients in Colorado.
After receiving the Provisional Prescriptive Authority, the nursing prescriber prescribe in the field they have specialized. Five years after the nursing prescriber has been given the Provisional Prescriptive Authority, the advanced perspective nurse must undergo an eighteen hundred-hour mentorship with a RXN mentor and a physician mentor (GraduatenursingEDU, 2012). The physician mentor and the APN have to develop a plan for their interaction during the mentorship. After completing the mentorship, the nurse practitioner and the physician must sign an articulated plan for safe prescribing.
