Inadequate Manpower
Being short-staffed for short periods of time is common in most professions, and it is often a minor inconvenience. In nursing, however, insufficient staffing can mean the difference between life and death.

“Staff shortages caused by cost-cutting decisions, an aging population, increased patient complexity and need, and an aging workforce place stress on working conditions for nurses, affecting patient care and overall outcomes,” according to the American Nurses Association. “A growing body of evidence shows that appropriate nurse staffing contributes to improved patient outcomes and higher patient and staff satisfaction.” 3

The ANA recommends in a report co-authored with the consulting firm Avalere that “staffing levels in a value-based healthcare system should not be fixed, as day-to-day hospital requirements are constantly in flux.”

The emotional and physical demands of caring for others add to nurses’ workload. In an ANA survey of 10,688 nurses, 82% said they were at a high risk of workplace stress. 5

To assist nurses in dealing with stress, the American Nurses Association (ANA) launched the Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationTM challenge, which aims to engage nurses, employers, and organizations in improving health in six areas: mental health, physical activity, nutrition, rest, quality of life, and safety.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) writes in Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Healthcare and Social Service Workers, “Healthcare and social service workers face an increased risk of work-related assaults resulting primarily from violent behavior of their patients, clients, and/or residents.” “While no single diagnosis or patient type predicts future violence, epidemiological studies consistently show that inpatient and acute psychiatric services, geriatric long-term care settings, high-volume urban emergency departments, and residential and day social services pose the greatest risks.” 9

OSHA, the ANA, and a number of other organizations are working to reduce violent incidents through regulations, guidelines, and education. “No staff nurse should have to deal with workplace violence, whether from coworkers, patients, or visitors,” the ANA says. 7

Self-Care Enhancement
This is a problem that is inextricably linked to the nursing profession.

“‘Care for yourself so you can care for others,’ an age-old adage that is all too easily forgotten in our hectic personal and professional lives.” “As caregivers, nurses have been socialized to care for others and, as a result, frequently prioritize their own needs second,” writes Margo Halm, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, in an article published in the American Journal of Critical Care. “Self-care remains critical for nurses to alleviate the negative effects of stress in the constantly changing healthcare environment and to prevent those effects from progressing to burnout, which can have devastating consequences for nurses and those under their care.” 10
