Metaparadigm is the term used to describe philosophies or ideologies of how a particular discipline should operate. Metaparadigms of nursing are impressions and propositions of how operations in the field of nursing should be conducted. It comprises all practices that one should carry out to be a nurse. There are four metaparadigms of nursing: the patient, environment, nursing, and health (Nikfarid et al., 2018). This paper will discuss the four nursing metaparadigms and their application in Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations.
The patient metaparadigm of nursing significantly focuses on the recipient of healthcare. It may also entail persons vital to them, such as their families or close friends. This component considers not only the healthcare needs of patients but also their social and spiritual necessities. Its main aim is to ensure that the person’s relationship with these social and physical aspects enhances individual health and welfare management while maintaining positive personal relations (Bender, 2018). The environment metaparadigm deals with a patient’s internal and external surroundings. One’s friends, family, other members they interact with, geographical location, cultural beliefs, and technology influence their health. This component teaches the necessity of modifying a patient’s environmental aspects to favor their health demands.
The health component explains patients’ access to healthcare and their wellness level. The health and welfare of patients cover their whole life and genetic makeup and how the interaction between their physical, social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing can be incorporated into health to make the most of health benefits. Finally, the nursing metaparadigm focuses on the transfer of optimal care from nurses to patients through a mutual relationship between them and an environment guaranteed of safety and care (Bender, 2018). The component emphasizes on the use of expertise, technology, skills, interaction, professional judgement, and communication to promote maximum health results.
Peplau’s interpersonal relations theory emphasizes the importance of the nurse-patient relationship to patients’ health and its influence on the experiences patients encounter (Hagerty et al., 2017). This theory enforces the patient component of nursing metaparadigms. It asserts the importance of conducting scientific research on patients’ needs and views about the care they receive from nurses. It is made up of four phases namely: preinteraction, orientation, working, and termination. As these enhance the relations between patients and nurses, they align to the environment metaparadigm by creating a positive environment that enhances maximum nursing care and promotes patients’ health. As nurses research to understand patients’ needs, the component of nursing is promoted hence achievement of health.
In conclusion, the application of Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations on Ortho floor facilitates full application of the four nursing metaparadigms in the patient-nurse interaction, promoting optimum health as patients take care of themselves and receive care from nurses.
