Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations
QUESTIONS
Choose two concepts in the theory you choose last week and describe: the middle-range theory was Peplau’s
How are the concepts defined in general (from other references)?
How does the theorist define each of the concepts you have chosen?
How do those concepts apply to your clinical practice? Give concrete examples.
I work on a hospital setting an orthopedics floor, we received patients after their joints replacements (knees, hip, shoulder) also we received patients from neurosurgery procedures (spinal fusion, cervical fusions)

General Definition of Concepts
The two concepts from Peplau’s theory that this undertaking will explain are orientation and exploitation phases. According to (Hagerty et al., 2017), the orientation defines a phase when nurses and patients meet for the first time. This is the time when the goals for nursing care are set. In this phase, patients need help adjusting to the new experiences. In the exploitation phase, the patient is made to feel an integral part of the helping environment. Additionally, this phase tends to be characterized by the patient making minor requests that the nurse ought to be aware of.

Theorist’s Definition of Chosen Concepts
Peplau defines the orientation phase as a phase where the type of service needed by a patient is identified. Moreover, she defines this phase as the juncture where the nurse assesses the health of the patient (Peplau, 1997). As for the exploitation phase, Peplau defines it as the phase where the patient gets accustomed to the helping environment. She adds that it is in this phase that nurses ought to help the patients exploit all the available venues that can positively contribute to their progress towards the final phase. Nurses implement their nursing plan in this phase.
Application of Concepts in Clinical Practice
These two concepts apply to my clinical practice in a raft of ways. The orientation phase, for instance, applies to my clinical practice in the sense that we have to introduce ourselves to the patients and assess the extent of their injuries before recommending a nursing intervention. The exploitation phase applies to my clinical practice in the sense that it is when we decide whether or not a patient needs a particular intervention such as joint replacement or a neurosurgery procedure.
