Obesity Among African American Children And Youths
Childhood is a period in which children should feel alive and connected to his or her social surroundings. Obesity at this period is unhealthy to the body of the child and his psychological well-being. Gaining excessive weight is typically attributed to behavior or genetics. The causes of obesity (especially in young children) are deeply rooted in the child’s genetic bearing or culture. It affects the ability to make the right choices as childhood obesity continues to become a threat to most African American Communities. Necessary interventions need to be put in place to pave the way for communal improvements (Molitor, 2020).
Proposed Solution
Calorie labeling on menus helps in making informed and healthy decisions concerning meals as well as snacks. This allows people to exercise personal responsibility (especially in African American Communities) to make informed decisions for themselves and their children. This would make parents conscious of the dietary choices that they are making for their kids (Coughlin et al., 2017).
Bariatric surgery has been a go-to technique for lots of people. It comprises of procedures undertaken on people who are suffering from obesity. Although this can be the last option in this epidemic, it helps individuals with high gut hormones responsible for hunger and satiety. Increasing access to the adolescent age group for this kind of surgery would help eliminate obesity.
Early care and education would be useful in educating parents on the destructive habits of unhealthy eating. This type of education would also go a long way in educating youngsters on the consequences of unhealthy eating. Governments should ensure that schools are accountable for the type of meals they provide students. School meals and beverages sold within school premises are within the 2010 Healthy Hunger –free Act (Brown et al., 2019).
Organizational Culture and Resources
Mayo Clinic is ready to actively participate in evidence-based practice by utilizing the available resources and workforce (Brown et al., 2019). Nurse practitioners and other healthcare practitioners are more than passionate about delivering quality service and quality care, which uniquely demonstrates their zeal and commitment to adopting evidence-based interventions around the community of their operation. Mayo clinic has fostered a teamwork culture, which assists in the propulsion of interventions such as school-based health education, community health promotion, and incorporating incentives such as free check-ups and counseling. Available resources comprise an impressively stocked and diverse library for research purposes, a research center with connections to a national research center (Kim et al., 2019). This is also in conjunction with doctors and nurse practitioners highly skilled and experienced who may offer mentorship and training to other health care practitioners.
Expected Outcomes
Cases of obesity in the African American community have been on the rise compared to children from other races. This has inevitably led to high morbidity and mortality rates among the community. High obesity within the community has been due to the increased adoption of non-healthy diets (Brown et al., 2019). By community health promotion in neighborhoods, community members are informed of the ingredients of their favorite foods and the dangers that they might pose to their health and the kid’s health. As many popular foods within the community have been readily adopted from advertisements that target the black community, health promotional activities would speak out against the dietary effects (Rodgers,2015). By having most community members informed, wise choices may over some time lead to a drastic reduction in the children’s body mass index, reflecting their improved health.
Method to Achieve Outcomes
The method to achieve outcome will be Increased health promotion in the communities. Increased access to bariatric surgery in healthcare settings in vulnerable settings (Coughlin et al., 2017). Health education in schools as well as advocating for healthier meals in such institutions. Developing school-based health centers in African American Neighbourhoods with a holistic approach can help combat the problem. The centers would provide various services such as mental health evaluation, check-ups that are affordable, and health campaigns in the respective schools. This includes creating awareness of the importance of physical exercise and avoiding local adherence to popular advertisements on fast foods (Molitor, 2020).
Outcome Impact
As mentioned earlier, the interventions’ outcomes will improve health statistics among the community members in the African American setting (Brown et al., 2019). Patient-centered outcomes can be primarily translated to physicians and the entire health team’s ability to care for the patient in a meaningful, valuable, and helpful manner (Molitor, 2020). This is focused on the needs, opinions, and beliefs of the patient. The Populus will be uniquely placed in receiving quality care from respective institutions by adhering to the interventions’ set standards and health measures. The reduction in the body mass index of many individuals will reduce the number of patients in need of cardiovascular treatment, bariatric, for instance, thereby increasing the physician-patient time. Ultimately quality is increased (Brown et al. 2019).
