ANSWER:
Introduction:
Hello to everyone.
My name is Mauricio Pereyra, and I work as an advanced practice nurse in Florida. I’ve been a nurse for six years, the last two of which I worked as a travel nurse. I’ve worked in various healthcare settings, including as a charge nurse in a CDU and occasionally in the ER. I come from a nursing family; my twin brother is a nurse, and my sister is a nursing director. It’s an honor to be a member of this class and to continue working toward my professional aspirations.
Introduction and Policy Involvement Discussion Topic
As an advanced practice nurse, I may participate in the political system in various ways to advocate for healthcare policy reforms and help shape public policy. One of the most important duties of advanced practice nurses is to give expert information and insights based on clinical expertise that can impact policy decisions at the local, state, and national levels. Here are a few ways I could participate in the political system:
1. Active Participation in Professional Organizations: By joining and actively participating in professional nursing organizations such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or state nursing associations, I can collaborate with other advanced practice nurses in advocating for policy changes that promote access to quality healthcare, broaden the scope of practice, and improve patient outcomes.
2. Legislative Advocacy: I advocate by being updated about healthcare policy problems, attending legislative sessions, and contacting elected officials to convey my thoughts and concerns. Meeting with politicians, writing letters or emails, engaging in public hearings, or joining grassroots advocacy campaigns can all be part of this.
3. Interprofessional Team Collaboration: Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, policymakers, and administrators, to provide a holistic view of healthcare policy challenges. I can contribute to developing policies that address the needs of patients and healthcare professionals by actively participating in interprofessional debates and efforts.
4. Research and EBP: Conducting and sharing research to inform policy decisions and support evidence-based practices. Advanced practice nurses can help design policies based on scientific research and improve the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient healthcare by creating rigorous evidence.
Though I have had little direct involvement in the political system, I would like to see public policy amended to improve access to healthcare services, particularly for underprivileged communities. Regardless of socioeconomic class, color, or geographic location, everyone deserves equal access to decent healthcare. Public policy improvements might focus on expanding healthcare coverage, increasing financing for community health centers, and addressing healthcare inequities to guarantee that everyone has access to timely and inexpensive care.
I’m excited to talk with my classmates and hear about their experiences and thoughts on public policy involvement.
