Nursing leadership is critical in today’s healthcare environment, which is undergoing unprecedented forceful restructuring (American Nurses Credentialing Center). Communication skills, self-awareness, and social intelligence are all required. Today’s leaders must reshape their organization’s values, beliefs, and behavior patterns instead of yesterday’s leadership requirement for stability and growth. The nurse leader’s complex and difficult moments of spectacular organizational change are comprehensive and challenging health systems. Effective nurse leaders have a thorough understanding of the clinical practice and work collaboratively with other leaders to improve patients’ quality of life, modify health systems, and inspire leaders.
The nurse leader’s style can significantly impact how well employees accept change and are motivated to provide high-quality care. According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the transformational leadership is among the five key Magnet Model elements required for an institution to be acknowledged for quality patient care through Magnet designation. The Magnet model highlights the importance of transformational leadership as a leadership style. Transformational leaders possess vision, impact, expert clinical knowledge relevant to professional practice, as well as the ability to challenge and develop others. Many nursing professionals embrace this style of leadership and believe they portray transformational leadership traits, but their staff may believe they are not. This research aims to describe the leadership style of the nurse managers in a Magnet-designated institution and to see if there exists between their notions of their leadership style and the conceptions of their particular directors and direct report registered nurses.
Transactional leaders use rewards or discipline to motivate their followers, with the type of incentive varying depending on the behavior. As leaders share their worldviews with others, transformational leadership creates a unique leader-follower relationship. Through their commitment to those who work for them, transformational leaders serve as an inspiration to others. Organizational success is driven by their commitment to a mission, willingness to experiment, and a strong desire to succeed.
Research has identified the nursing profession with transformative leadership as being supportive of decision-making and involvement of the people, inspiring determination to implement a vision, and fostering autonomy. Nurse work environments, retention rates, practice procedures, and organizational outcomes are all evaluated regularly by healthcare organizations. Clear vision, dedication to greatness, capacity to inspire and lead others to attain and the formation of suitable healthy work settings are all characteristics associated with transformative leadership and are required for Magnet designation.
