Module 09 Discussion – Mental Healthcare For Adolescence & Children
ANSWER
This module has helped me to understand the healthcare needs of children. Our readings from this module have given me a new appreciation for what is necessary for the mental health of children and adolescents. I am now more aware of the psychosocial stigma that exists in society about psychological issues and mental illness, as it relates specifically to the adolescent population. We have also discussed how significant parental involvement with their adolescent’s therapy is essential for successful treatment, not only when discussing personal issues but also in following through with recommendations from clinicians. The work in this module has given me insight into why adolescent mental health is so stigmatized and has provided examples of how we can make a difference in the lives of our youth. It also has taught me about the numerous possibilities for mental healthcare for our children – this is something I’ve been slowly learning about over my lifetime. I have always wondered how it would be possible to form a support group with other parents whose kids receive therapy or need treatment for their emotional issues. This module has opened my eyes to a much broader understanding of mental healthcare’s importance and helped me see just how far-reaching it can be. Scenario
Ryan is a 12 year old diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). As a small child, Ryan was first diagnosed with Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder. He had just started preschool and was unable to remain in one place for more than a minute or two. His parents had already had a very difficult time in disciplining him, because he would become very upset and throw temper tantrums when he could not do as he wished. He just seemed to be an unhappy, irritable child. This behavior continued in school. As time progressed, Ryan was diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, because he continued to refuse to listen to adults and comply with the rules.
By the age of 12, he has begun to bully and annoy others. His parents have decided that the approaches they have used in the past are not working, and they are more afraid his behavior will only get worse.
