HCA 322 Week 1 Assignment, Informed Consent Anesthesia
answer: HCA 322 Week 1 Assignment, Informed Consent Anesthesia
Introduction
According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, “anesthesia is freedom from pain. Anesthesia is a safe and effective means of alleviating pain during nearly every type of medical procedure (“All About Anesthesia”, 2015).” Anesthesia is commonly and consistently used in every hospital when seeking medical treatment or surgery. Anesthesia is administered by a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist (physician anesthetist). This common use of pain management is accepted in modern medicine and one that many individuals have experienced or potentially will experience when faced with a medical condition that requires the use of anesthesia. I have only experienced anesthesiology once but it really wasn’t anything that I have ever been able to remember given the surgical circumstances.
Consent Requirements
There are five consent requirements within the Anesthesia Consent Form. There is adequate disclosure of the information in that the form completely goes over what is involved, side effects, potential problems, and the different types of anesthesia. There is the decisional capacity of the patient in that it states what is understood by the patient after being informed of the adequate disclosures. The patient’s comprehension of information is simply stated and broken down between what are common side effects, uncommon or rare side effects, and clearly states the risks involved. Voluntariness is also stated in that questions for the CRNA or Anesthesiologist can be made in order to further understand the consent form.
Lastly, the consent of the patient is clearly stated by their signature and acknowledgment of the other requirements within the consent form. In my opinion, this consent form meets the necessary requirements in order for the anesthesia to be administered to the patient by the CRGNA or the Anesthesiologist for the use of pain management prior to a procedure or surgery.
