HOSPITAL APPLICATION – LEADERSHIP THEORIES
HCA 455 Week 1 DQ 1 and 2HCA 455 Topic 2 Assignment, Hospital Application – Leadership Theories
The Hospital Application provided for this week’s scenario describes a large hospital that
decided to eliminate a generalist model of staffing. Instead they created two specific work
groups that would focus on specific projects. The plan was announced to all the staff they were
split evenly between the two managers that were overseeing people in the generalist model of
staffing. The project-specific performances would be measured through the following metrics:
efficiency outcomes, survey results, and resource expenditures. [ CITATION Hos2 \l 1033 ]. This
paper will discuss the leadership styles of the two leaders, and how situational management,
transactional leadership, and transformational leadership theories are used.
Rachel, the manager of the first group, immediately announces that lead positions will be
assigned to people that she deems to have leadership abilities and a desire to
succeed[ CITATION Hos2 \l 1033 ] The staff immediately question Rachel on the metrics she
will be using to determine this. She then says that she will be determined by her personally based
on individual performance and whether they were “doing their best work”.
After the meeting the employees in Rachel’s group gathered to discuss the situation.
Some said that she typically had “favorites” and from their experience, they also thought the way
to become a “favorite” was by taking on extra tasks and extra hours.
Tomas greets his groups meeting with team building exercises and announcing that there
will be no lead on his team. Tomas then led the group through an activity to identify their
strengths, weaknesses, and special skills. Then they participated in a team-building activity
designed to demonstrate the importance of interdependency. The group discussed the meeting as
they were leaving, and they had mixed feelings. Some people were excited but frustrated because
there was not information on how actual job duties and expectations would be evaluated. Some
others said the team building activities were “fluff” and a waste of time’ ….
…The hospital initiated this new approach to improve efficiency in the quality improvement
department, and to eliminate a generalist model of staffing. A generalist model is a decentralized
approach that attempts to provide a variety of services that fit the unique needs of the business.
A generalist model is good for business because it provides solutions to fit the needs of the
business, but it can also lack the technical knowledge to solve complex problems.
Leaders can encourage the development, application, and improvement of their
employees’ skills outside of their office as well, and team settings are one of the best places to do
it. It is not clear which strategy will be most effective but they both have strengths and
weaknesses. Having strong leadership that bolsters employees trust and enthusiasm is crucial to
any work environment.
