QUESTION
Instructions
Using the Narrative Essay Planning Template that you completed for last week’s assignment, you are now ready to compose the full and final narrative essay.

This essay, your Week 2 assignment, should consist of nothing but your story, your “showing” of the moment in time to your reader. While you addressed concepts like audience and purpose last week in your planning document, you will not write about those concepts in your essay. Your Week 2 assignment, the full final draft of your Narrative Essay, should do nothing but tell your story and bring your reader into the scene with you, from start to finish.

Be sure to read this week’s lesson and Chapter 6 in your text for information about adding rich description to narration for maximum success, keeping these key components in mind:

Narratives take a specific angle that tells the story of a single, powerful, meaningful moment in time, a person, place, or event with which you had first-hand experience.
Narratives are not full life stories; instead, they share a fresh perspective on a one significant day/moment in time for you.
The narrative should focus on something that happened to you in a moment in time, anywhere from an extremely powerful few minutes to a deeply rich and meaningful hour. The writing should be powerful enough to show that it has shaped you, even changed you significantly.
Narratives require writers to take a close look at the surroundings and at the people present and to use very rich detail and description to bring the subject to life.
The audience of the narrative essay is general – humans. Therefore, you must bring your reader into the scene with you through narration and description while also successfully communicating an angle and situation.
Reviewing all of the sample essays in Chapters 5 and 6 will give you a feel for all of these conventions.

Important: Outside research is not allowed for this essay.

Descriptive Essay
It was a cold chilly morning, and I listened to the morning news on my car radio as I drove to work. The daily Covid-19 infection count, as reported in the news, was rising shockingly fast, leaving everyone scared. Strong alcohol like smell welcomed me as I drove into the hospital parking. It was from the alcohol-based sanitizing liquid that was being sprayed all over the hospital premises. The sanitizing crew looked like astronauts in their snow-white protective suits. An isolation center had been set up in readiness for any Covid-19 patients we would receive.
Barely had I got out of my car when an ambulance got into the hospital, sirens blazing loudly. Seeing the ambulance driver dressed in a protective suit made me realize that it was a Covid-19 case. I rushed into the hospital, changing room to get into my protective suit. I wore it over my sky-blue scrubs and headed to the isolation center since I was one of the nurses assigned to the isolation center. Despite having been trained on handling Covid-19 patients while protecting ourselves, seeing the patients being brought into the hospital sent a cold chill down my spine. I had only seen Covid-19 patient on the news, and here was our first case!
He was a short and stocky man with charcoal gray hair and a shaggy beard. He was gasping for air with a lot of difficulty breathing. We quickly admitted him into the emergency room and put him on a ventilator. We took a blood sample to conduct the tests to determine if he had Covid-19. I could feel ice-cold sweat forming on my forehead. My colleagues were scared as well, but we had to honor the hypocritical oath and perform our duty to the best of our abilities. We administered pain killers to reduce the pain, and within some minutes, the patient’s groans reduced.
His wife had accompanied him in the ambulance, and we also tested her to find out if she had also been infected. She tested positive, and we admitted her too. She started weeping, and we had to counsel her to give her hope that they both had a chance of recovering and that we would do our best to help them. Her eyes were beetroot red from crying, and looking at her made me almost shed tears. I clearly understood what she was going through. She requested us to put her beside her husband, and we obediently complied. After two very long hours of attending to them, I decided to take a break after determining that they were both in stable condition.
I headed to the changing room to take off my protective gear and shower to disinfect myself. I then went to the nurses’ lounge to get a cup of coffee. We had a very emotional conversation with my colleagues, and I came to learn that my colleagues were as worried as I was about our patients. We decided to pray for them and ask for guidance as we helped our patients. We decided to take alternating hourly shifts looking after the patients to make sure they remained stable. I decided to take the first shift after our break.
Hardly had I finished my coffee when I heard a high-pitched scream come from the isolation wards. I rushed into the changing room and quickly put on the protective suit, and dashed into the ward where our patients were. I found the man convulsing and quickly rolled him onto his side to make him comfortable. My colleagues had also come running after the scream alerted us, and one of them rushed to get the doctor. The convulsions suddenly stopped, and the patient became still. I rolled him back onto his back and noticed that he had stopped breathing. The doctor came in the running, and we started trying to resuscitate him. His wife was crying uncontrollably as she saw what was happening. Our efforts proved futile after the doctor regrettably pronounced the man dead. Despair was written all over our female patient’s round chubby face when her husband’s lifeless body was moved to the morgue. She had cried for almost an hour and was staring blankly at the bed that her husband had lain on while lying on her side.
The wife recovered after several weeks and was discharged. She had a very hard time during her stay at the hospital, but we made sure she underwent psychological counseling. She remained quiet and in deep thought throughout the treatment period. I clearly understood the pain she was in, having lost my brother that same year. We had several more patients after our first two. I remain shocked at how much pain and grief the Covid-19 pandemic has caused our country. Despite losing several more patients, we remain hopeful that we will overcome the disease. Our hope is raised every time we see a patient recover fully.
