Critique of a Nursing Research Article by Bente, Christina, Marie and Birgitta
After reading and critically appraising the research article, “A Study of Reasons for Underusing Epidural Analgesia in Labour,” it is evident that there are many strong points to the study. The sample size was large and included a good mix of primiparous and multiparous women from a variety of cultures. The use of structured questionnaires ensured reliability and validity of the data collected. However, there were several weaknesses in the study as well. The majority of the participants were white and married, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. In addition, self-report measures were used to collect data on epidural use, which is subject to recall bias. Despite these limitations, this study provides valuable insights into reasons why some women choose not to utilize epidural analgesia during labor.
