Agenda Setting and How Past Presidents Have Managed Agenda Setting
Agenda setting public policymaking is described as a role of either three items of policy activity. The policy activities are; The health problems, feasible solutions to the issues, and political inclinations. A new public issue law and an amendment to a present policy are taken from competing and feasible solutions in the policymaking process. However, the mere existence of problems in these areas was not sufficient to spark up policy or legislation development changes intended to address them.
For instance, the presence of health-related issues, even increasingly serious ones such as millions of people lacking healthcare insurance or the widespread use of tobacco products, does not lead directly to establishing policies intended to solve or eliminate this issue. To achieve the healthcare agenda setting’s fete, there must exist various feasible solutions to the issues and the political inclination to enact specific legislation that strives to solve or eliminate these issues. Therefore, setting the agenda is imminent to the nature of the nation’s healthcare policies. It is thereby comprehended through three vital gateways, problems, possible solutions, and political circumstances (Wilstead et al., 2019).
Healthcare has been an important agenda in setting the stage for national politics. Through the years, the political arena has been swarmed by various controversies concerning bipartisan view on healthcare recommendations. At the Tenure of President Bush’s service, H IV /AIDS was a growing health concern worldwide; therefore, The United States had to take action as one of the world leaders. President Bush made a resolution to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Through the state of the union address in 2003, he announced the president’s emergency plan for Aids relief to aid in the global spread and containment of the HIV/AIDS virus.
Over fifteen billion dollars was allocated to this cause. President Bush took it upon himself to make it a foreign policy plan to alleviate the spreading of the world. President Obama’s Affordable Care Act was the most consequential of all health policies for a long time. The affordable care act faced strong opposition from republican counterparts but managed to be signed into law in March 2010. The Affordable Care Act managed to enhance healthcare and patient safety, aimed to secure coverage insurance policyholders, and offer extended coverage to uninsured populations. It further enhanced better health care services, to be more inclusive in diversity competent care for all American demographics. Reduction in skyrocketing healthcare costs while advocating for high-value care.
President Trump has largely been inactive in healthcare amendments or policy creation. However, he has been largely concerned with major regulations of past reform such as the Affordable Healthcare Act. While the policy had many shortcomings, this does not render it as useless as many republican politicians. Under President Trump, a review of statutes that were considered regressive was reviewed. Such as the penalty on the failure of meeting the ACCA coverage mandate. A lot of republican led states have filed countless lawsuits on various aspects of the Affordable Care Act. Setting aside bipartisan politics, healthcare policy review, amendment or draft is a process that requires support from both sides of the political divide.
