What were your highlights
In my practicum, I have gotten firsthand experience working in a health care facility. So far, I have been in the general practice and dealt with physical assessment, Skin, hair, nails, abdomen, head & neck. I have practiced the physical assessment procedure( inspection, percussion, palpation, and auscultation). It was exciting as I got to practice my nursing theory finally. I learned a great deal about professionalism, goal setting, and action to take during certain work-related situations. I strongly believe that through this practicum experience, I have become more confident in the work I do. It enabled me to become more prepared in my future work environment. Working in such a setting expanded my thinking horizon as I got on the ground to help make people’s lives better. I was honored and enjoyed being of assistance around making my presence a vital factor in the clinic’s daily operations.
How have your learning experiences in this course affected your current nursing role?
The practicum experience had an enormous impact on my role as a nurse. I learned that there was still a lot to learn as much of my knowledge was mainly in theory. The variety of other specialists at the clinic only helped me to enhance my love for my specialty. I have come to appreciate the value of integrated settings in working environments as each specialty has taught me something new every time we get to interact (Kaihlanen et al., 2020).
How will your learning experiences to this point influence your future professional practice?
My previous learning experiences have taught me that we will always be learners at whatever stage. In physical assessment, hair, neck, and nails, I have learned that clinicians must also consider the patient’s age, gender, race, culture, and environment, which I have never considered important. Additionally, I have learned to form relationships with my workmates (especially other nurse specialties) because we have a lot to learn from them.
What steps will you take to increase proficiency and efficiency in your performance?
By doing consistent research and frequently engaging in practice environments with experienced professionals, I will learn new things. A practical experience will help me learn from my mistakes (Fuentes-Pumarola et al., 2016). During the practicum, I have learned that taking a comprehensive patient history is the most significant tool in determining an accurate diagnosis. Therefore, I intend to continuously study and expand my nursing knowledge to better my history analysis technique.
Online Content That Has Enhanced My Understanding Of Advanced Assessment
During my practicum, I made it a habit of watching youtube videos focused on physical assessment, head, kneck, and nails. Particularly, videos by Harper college nursing and Ronnie Mann on Youtube (YouTube, n.d.). The content mentioned above has been a reference point for my examinations, especially without any other clinician’s supervision.
